Welcome to Kubernesis (Administration)

This site is dedicated to the topic of the Gift of Administration (Kubernesis) given by the Holy Spirit and mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:28

“…And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments (greek: kubernesis), diversities of tongues.”

Greek word is Kubernesis, translated in to various words such as:

  • ASV – Governments – Plural
  • KJV – Governments – Plural
  • NASB – Administrations – Plural
  • NKJV – Administrations – Plural
  • NIV – Guidance
  • The Message – Organizers

My personal translation is the Kubernesis (is a verb) which means to steer many things simultaneously. A lot like steering an old sailing boat where the pilot steers the rudder, but also orders the sheeting of sails and other activities on deck (orchestrated) in harmony to get the vessel moving, keep the vessel moving, keep away from threats (pirates, reefs, storms), and navigate toward the destination, carrying a consignment of cargo.

1 COR 12:28 Gift of Administration (Kubernesis) is actually correctly translated into the plural. Administration(s), Government(s) KJV… This is key for understanding the multiple facets and dynamics of the gift to arrange, manage, lead, equip and authorise MULTIPLE dominions in the Kingdom. We cannot warfare effectively, unless we clearly understand dominions and who is legally allowed to govern and operate in those dominions. This Gift constantly eyes dominions, boundaries, borders, authorisation, threats and safety in terms of the household of God and assess any change of strategy or direction relative to the fulfillment (or not) of the Church vision.

Since September 2011 my original site was dedicated to the Gift of Governments/Administrations (Kubernesis) mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:28, which is the supernatural gift to the local church for Strategic Planning, Execution, Enablement, Change, People and Resource Management to steer the church towards it’s God- breathed vision.

There are several key audiences for this website,

1. Have it – You have it and walk in it. Connect with others and get encouraged to gain more insight and wisdom from others walking in the fullness of the gift. People carrying the Gift may struggle to unlock/unpack the Gift (most people don’t want this gift due to the poor understanding of it via contemporary church leaders. It is a potent gift, equivalent in the miraculous realm like healing, except it’s used to produce supernatural organisational outcomes.). This website will help connect you with others.

2. Understand it – You get it and want to link with others carrying the gift or at least understand the necessity of the gift and a mature view of it’s operation.

3. Need/Want It – Those grappling with strategic and organisational challenges who don’t possess this Gift, but need it (and better understanding of it), and can ask the Lord to either impart the Gift or make it available via someone else carrying the Gift, and

4. Have no Idea – Some people and leaders have no idea what this gift is, what it means, how it is to be used… This website will help educate.

What is it about… 1 Corinthians 12:28 says:

“…And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments (Greek=kubernesis), diversities of tongues.” KJV

Kubernesis (greek verb) means to steer, like steer a ship, or aircraft, to pilot, to govern, to rudder. James uses the metaphor of a small rudder of a ship being like the tongue, able to steer a large vessel (James 3:4). The Gift of Governments is in the class of a “prophetic” spoken gift, to steer the church against the forces of evil and opposition toward a strategic outcome.

Plural – The verb means to steer, but the greek language used alludes to steering many things SIMULTANEOUSLY. Under normal circumstances steering a boat means steering a single rudder. This gift is the supernatural steerage ability of many complex dimensions of church organisation(s), people-groups and resources (physical-seen and spiritual-unseen).

Kingdon Pilot ? What’s That ??

Kubernetes (greek noun) refers to the person who performs kubernesis. This is the pilot or the navigator and is the same word used for Greek airline pilots in the airline industry today. It is important to note that a pilot MAY NOT be the owner or the captain of a vessel. On a large commercial airliner the captain typically does not perform navigation, but another flight engineer who is trained and authorised for that task. In smaller aircraft or vessels, a single pilot may perform all control and navigational functions. In bible times merchants owned one or more vessels and determined cargo and destinations. The pilots (kubernetes) were paid employees with specially trained skills to navigate the ships from port to port, avoiding pirates, war zones, dangerous reefs, dangerous currents and chart safe passage through favourable conditions for passengers and cargo. The Gift of Governments operates in the same way with the Holy Spirit instructing via the gift, how to deliver the sacred cargo of the local church to a pre-determined strategic destination, with supernatural guidance to avoid catastrophic and evil forces along the way, whilst maintaining joy and effectiveness.

Carrying this Gift – The Holy Spirit distributes this gift at his pleasure to whomever he wishes. In well run churches it’s not unusual to find a senior leader with a pastoral gifting as well as an administrative gifting. However a huge challenge for church leaders can occur, when this gift gets deposited on an unlikely non-leader. These people tend to be very organised and highly successful in the marketplace, and often at odds with ineffective or inefficient church leadership. That is one enigmatic element of this gift. These people are easily identified as deep thinkers, structured thinkers, strategic thinkers, good at planning, they like order, often working in design, architecture or organisational leadership roles in the marketplace, heavy networkers, hard working, busy, and always looking for faster, smarter ways to perform tasks, train others, reduce workload and reproduce good solutions through training or multiplication. They are not always good at execution or details, this is where the supernatural gift of Helps is a wonderful complimentary gift when the challenge is big.

TEST – Does this sound like you ? or someone you know ? People like this need encouragement to carry what can be a challenging but very rewarding gift. Look on this website for some useful assessment tools and other reading…

Finnis Dakes defines Kubernesis as:

” a steering; a pilotage; a guiding. Used only here and refers to all the the means of guidance God has set in the Church. It has no reference to the power to rule, but to men of extraordinary wisdom, knowledge and discernment to guide the Church in all its problems. The gift of wisdom, knowledge and discernment of spirits are all involved in this ability of guidance.” Dakes Annotated Bible 1963, page 185.
